This character expression sheet was created as a class character design project focused on facial expression exploration and emotional exaggeration. The main goal of the project was to strengthen my ability to communicate personality through facial features while maintaining consistency across multiple angles and emotions.
For this project, I wanted to place a stronger emphasis on the facial structure and expressions themselves, so I kept the rendering style simple with minimal shading and highlights. This allowed the expressions to remain the focal point while also helping me practice clarity in shape language and stylized facial construction. I intentionally exaggerated some of the more emotional expressions to push personality and create a wider emotional range throughout the sheet.
The color palette was kept warm and natural to complement the softer rendering style while still allowing the character’s features to stand out. The clothing and overall design were intentionally simple so the viewer’s attention would remain focused on the face and expression work rather than environmental or costume details.
This project was created in Clip Studio Paint EX using the G-Pen tool for linework and rendering.
As my first expression sheet, one of the biggest challenges was maintaining facial consistency across different poses, angles, and exaggerated emotions while still making each expression feel unique. Through this project, I learned more about facial construction and the importance of subtle feature placement when designing recognizable characters.
Looking back, there are some expressions I would revisit to improve consistency across the sheet, but I am proud of how the project helped me push expression work further and experiment with more exaggerated emotional acting in character design.
